Dogwood Cottage Rules and Policies

Hours of Operation:

Dogwood Cottage cares for pet guests 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. However, we do have restricted hours for our front desk and for the lobby check in and check out.

Business Hours (Reservations and Business Matters):
Monday-Friday 9am - 5pm

Check In/Out Hours for Daycare and Boarding:
Monday-Friday 7am - 7pm
Saturday and Sunday 9:30am - 5pm

  • The preferred and fastest way to book a reservation is to call the front desk during business hours. If you call after business hours or try to book through email, we may not be able to accommodate your request.
  • For safety and comfort reasons we do recommend that you check your dog in before 11am to ensure safe integration into the pack and to provide proper exercise to those boarding before they are settled in for the night.
  • For boarding pets, please allow 15 minutes in your schedule to ensure accuracy at check in.
  • Check out time is 12:00 pm, if you do not want to incur a daycare fee. Pets picked up after 12:00 pm will require additional care and will be charged a fee equivalent to one day of daycare.
  • Dogs dropped off prior to check in or picked up after closing hours will incur a fee of $15/hour. Due to our evening schedule and out of respect for our neighbors, dogs may not be picked up after 8pm. If you cannot get here before 8pm, your dog will need to board overnight and wait to be picked up until opening the next day.
  • Dogwood is closed for daycare and transportation on all major MA state holidays.

Daycare and Boarding Requirements:

Daycare is a cage-free service designed for social dogs to play and have fun. Our boarding services cater to social dogs that can be in daycare all day and boarded overnight in an open environment. Due to our unique philosophy, Dogwood is not for every dog. To be accepted into our daycare and/or boarding program, each guest must:

  1. Read, sign and turn in the paperwork found on our website:
    a. Registration Form
    b. Master Services Agreement
    c. Rules and Policies
    d. Off-Leash Play Application
    e. Emergency Contact Form (boarding only)
    f. Medication Form (boarding only)
    g. Vet Release Form (proof that your pet is healthy enough for daycare and boarding in a cage free environment)
  2. Be at least 16 weeks of age and have completed their first two series of vaccinations, including
    a. Rabies
    b. Distemper
    c. Bordetella
    d. Leptospirosis
  3. Provide proof of a clean fecal exam performed in the past year
  4. Provide proof from vet of required vaccinations
  5. Attend an evaluation day (this is a full day of daycare and single-day fee applies) and be deemed “safe for play” in order to utilize daycare and/or boarding services. Canine guests must possess a temperament that is safe for the pack at large and allows staff members to be able to properly care for them. Pets cannot pose a danger to staff members or other dogs.
  6. Must be spayed or neutered by six months of age
  7. Dogs with a history of seizures or on medication for seizures, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and other serious health conditions will not be admitted into our daycare or boarding programs
  8. Due to the fragility and bone development of many toy breeds, boarding dogs under 8lbs will not be accepted into our boarding program until they are 1.5 years old
  9. Dogs in the very late stages of life who do not enjoy a playful, pack environment will not be admitted into our daycare or boarding programs

Daycare Preparation:

  • Daycare dogs require a collar - please remove lights, tags, embellishments as they can fall off in daycare and become a choking hazard- keep in mind dogs do have teeth and the collar may get harmed so please do not send your dog with an expensive and/or valuable collar
  • Please bring your dog for a potty break before dropping off for daycare
  • There is a strict limit of one owner with dog(s) at a time in our lobby. This is for the safety and comfort of you and your pup since some pups become leash aggressive and/or possessive of their owners. You may be asked to kindly wait in the breezeway if there is someone already in the lobby.
  • To ensure safety and proper staffing, always call ahead for a reservation, and remember to call if you need to cancel so we may fill your spot. If you arrive without a reservation and we are at capacity, you may be turned away at the door.
  • Prearranged transportation is available and requires a prearranged reservation. We cannot accommodate day of reservations for transportation. We offer door to door service to Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South End, Melrose, Malden, Stoneham and Wakefield. We have two bus stops, one on Charles Street in Beacon Hill and one on Beacon Street in front of the Hampshire House.
  • If your dog requires lunch, you may send it to daycare where it will be administered for a service charge of $5.

Boarding Preparation

  • Customers are required to provide their dog’s own food. Each meal should be separated into baggies and labeled with your dog’s first and last name and mealtime (AM, lunch or PM). In the event your supply of food runs short and needs to be replenished, a food fee of $5 will be charged for each meal and we will provide house food.
  • All medications (any OTCs, prescriptions, vitamin supplements, eye drops, ear drops and/or ointments, etc...) shall be provided by owner and our medication form must be completed, including: medication name, what the medication is for, pet’s name, dosage, and administration schedule. A service fee of $5 for up to three meds per day will be applied to your invoice.
  • Each medication should be separated into baggies and labeled with dogs first and last name and administration time (AM, lunch, PM)
  • Dogwood provides comfortable, clean bedding for those dogs that are not at risk of chewing or being destructive. Due to safety and sanitary considerations, we cannot accept any personal belongings other than a wire or plastic crate. Crate bedding is ok. We do not accept soft crates.
  • Everything you bring with your pet for boarding must be clearly labeled with first and last name.
  • In order to admit your pup for boarding, you MUST complete our Emergency Contact form. A local emergency contact must be prepared to receive a call from Dogwood in the event of an emergency. Your emergency contact will also be expected to assume responsibility if your dog requires veterinary care and can no longer board at Dogwood. Canine guests without a local emergency contact will NOT be admitted into boarding.
  • Guests MUST provide the location of the trip and the name of where they are staying so we may contact you in the event of an emergency.
  • Guests MUST provide a Vet Release Form, indicating that your pet is healthy enough to board in a cage free environment, and is without preexisting conditions that may put your dog’s health at risk.
  • Dogwood reserves the right to refuse admittance to any pet guest for any reason, at any time, including but not limited to- an owner who is noncompliant to the Dogwood Rules and Policies, a pup who lacks proof of vaccinations, has a preexisting condition, has a poor boarding record, displays signs of untreated or potentially contagious conditions, demonstrates aggressive behavior or who fails our standard health and temperament policies.

Healthcare and Behavior:

  • All guests must be in good health and must not have had or been exposed to any contagious or communicable illnesses within a 30-day period prior to check in.
  • Dogwood will NOT admit boarding guests that have a terminal illness or are in the late stages of illness or life.
  • All guests that enter the facility with fleas will be charged a $25 fee. A flea infested pet will be brought to grooming and immediately given a flea bath at a service cost of $50.
  • Pets showing signs of vomiting, coughing, gagging, sneezing or diarrhea may not be admitted at check in.
  • Boarding guests must provide a Vet Release Form, indicating that your pet is healthy enough to board in a cage free environment, and is without preexisting conditions that may put your dog’s health at risk.
  • It is standard for each canine overnight guest to be part of our daily playgroup, therefore we require dogs to be social and trustworthy in the pack environment. In the case that your dog’s behavior changes over the course of their stay and can no longer join the pack, your dog will be brought out front for potty breaks or into the yard alone for an additional daily fee of $10. 30 and 45 minute walks are available for $15/$25.
  • Daycare is not right for every dog. Therefore, in the case your dog’s behavior changes over the course of their daycare schedule, our concerns will be communicated with the owner and we may come to the conclusion that Dogwood is no longer the right fit for your dog.
  • Dogwood reserves the right to refuse admittance to any pet guest for any reason, at any time, including but not limited to- a noncompliant owner, a pup who lacks proof of vaccinations, displays signs of untreated or potentially contagious conditions, demonstrates aggressive behavior or who fails our standard health and temperament policies.
